Here is why setting up this scholarship was so important:
On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists launched coordinated attacks on the U.S. using airplanes as their weapons and nearly 3000 people were killed…
That day.
The number of deaths from 911 continues to grow every day since then, with no end in sight.
The newscasters that awful morning are recorded saying, “You will remember this day as long as you live”
The thousands of rescue personnel who heroically raced toward the devastation for recovery efforts in the aftermath continue to get sick and die from the toxins they were exposed to more than 20 years ago. “as long as you live” has been shortened for them.
The service and sacrifices they willingly made looking for survivors, or what was left of them, years later has cost them their lives.
Ron Erbel is one of them, 21 years after that day.
His children are now fatherless; his wife a widow, and his grandchildren without their beloved Papi. All because of this horrific event, 21 years ago.
But there is more to this story.
It is not only those who served during the aftermath of 9-11.
So many fireman and woman risks their lives every day going into heroic situations to save lives, and it is cancer that is the leading cause of death amongst firefighters.
Ron knew this.
He knew from his own experience, that lives were cut short, not only from going into dangerous situations, but even more so, from the dangerous chemicals his fellow firefighters breath in every day they show up to work and put on their uniforms.
My dad understood that when the lives of his comrades are taken prematurely, the children and spouses and grandchildren not only lose their loved ones, but they lose opportunities they would’ve had if the life of their loved one had not been take too soon.
Ron Erbel, set up this scholarship for the families and the individuals in his community of Key Biscayne that have sacrificed at least 15 years of service as a firefighter.
You would be honoring his life of sacrifice and service if you donate.
God bless.
